|Faces| Huda Kattan

Like most successful people, Huda Kattan started small.  While holding down a job in finance that she hated, she launched a beauty blog in 2010, soon after which she quit her finance job. Kattan then started her Instagram account in 2012, followed by a beauty business selling false eyelashes in 2013.

Luck seemed to be on her side and in her case small got huge very quickly. The Dubai-based Kattan is now unchallenged in the makeup world. She has a breathtaking 20.7 million Instagram followers and has smartly leveraged that social media following to grow her business. She now offers liquid lipsticks, lip strobes, highlighter palette and eye shadows in addition to her lashes, which are available through her online shop and Sephora, which has 11.9 million followers on Instagram.

Kattan was born to Iraqi parents. She attended college in Michigan where she studied finance, a career she quickly gave up to become a makeup artist. Kattan met her husband at college and they moved to Dubai in 2008, where she now happily resides with him and their daughter.

When asked about the way beauty is perceived in Dubai she said  “Beauty in Dubai is on another level. I grew up in Tennessee. I loved to wear full glam. I used to want to wear flash lashes every single day. I remember wearing them once and someone was like, “Are you wearing false lashes?” I felt embarrassed. In the U.S., it’s perceived as though you’re trying too hard.

In Dubai, people respect you if you wear lashes to the grocery store. I’ve been at the gym at 5 in the morning and seen full glam, which, I think working out with your full makeup is just crazy. But it’s more over the top here. Middle Eastern women have very strong features, and makeup tends to accentuate those features really well without looking like too much.”

She says “I took beauty so seriously before, and I do still, but not in a way where I can’t have fun with it. I’m passionate to learn more, passionate to know how we can change people’s lives by giving them one tip. But when it comes to the look, it should be fun. You should just be like, “Yeah, I’m a cake face — so what?”

It is said that she makes an astonishing AED 66,000 with each instagram post.  Huda Kattan has changed a lot over the years and that simply proves that you CAN be the best version of yourself. She never feels shy to talk about her surgeries, fillers etc. unlike other public figures.  She is extremely humble, down to earth and truly inspirational. She is on the Internet’s most fascinating people’s list

Exotic Chicken Sandwiches

A sandwich is something which can be diversified into such beautiful looking food that it gets hard to resist the temptation of picking it up from the platter and taking a considerable bite. Sandwiches are healthy, nutritious, can be used on various occasions, can be carried around while walking, can be eaten during driving a car (not that i’m suggesting in anyway that you do just that), are perfect for picnics, traveling, lunch boxes, lavish high tea parties and what not! We all LOVE sandwiches. While there are so many different ways of making an awesome sandwich, so many different kinds of breads and buns to choose from..today we bring you a recipe from one of our food experts Anum Sohail, who knows just how to bring out the right flavours in her gorgeous, well kept kitchen. So without further adieu, let me give you her mouth watering recipe.
Men, if you want to give your women a day off from cooking, you should definitely try this and surprise her this women’s day!

Prep the Chicken, you will need:
Chicken 1 kg boneless
Garlic cloves 5 or 6
Chinese salt 1/2 tsp
Chilli flakes 1/2 tsp
Chilli Sauce 1 tsp
White Vinegar 2 tsp
White pepper 1/4 tsp
Oregano 1 tsp

Now move onto a nice tantalizing sauce, here is what you’ll need:
Egg 1
Garlic Clove 1
Green Chilli 1
Sugar 1/4 tsp
Chinese Salt 1/4 tsp
Black pepper 1/4 tsp
White vinegar 1 and 1/2 tsp
Oil 1 cup

Cheddar cheese
Ice berg
Cucumber thinly sliced
Green olives

Saute garlic cloves in oil and add chicken. Fry a little and add chinese salt, black pepper, chilli sauce, white vinegar, white pepper, chilli flakes and cook well. Once chicken feels nice and tender, add oregano, stir and leave aside.
Moving onto sauce, in a blender add egg, green chilli, vinegar, chinese salt, black pepper, sugar, garlic clove and blend well. Now very slowly start adding oil into it and let it blend till it thickens. Turn off the blender, set aside.

Take a pan and lightly grease with butter, put the bread slices (you can choose your own type of bread), on the pan till you get a very light golden colour. Now your bread is ready for the rest of the ingredients and filling. Put a generous amount of your prepared sauce, chicken and cheddar cheese on the slices. Add a layer of cucumber, olives and iceberg salad leaves and TA-Da! Your sandwiches are ready! While you are busy making sandwiches, make sure you get your french fries in the fryer to complete the fun of eating sandwiches.

From The World Of Fashion!

What is fashion?

We asked people and this is what they had to say about it…

Natasha Zafar:
Anything that makes u feel yourself.

14908417_10209061262422579_7646506527321110497_n   Mehr Ispahani: Fashion is a prevailing style, especially in clothing, hair, makeup, footwear, followed by people and that becomes a fashion statement.

15137508_10153981440136720_1777479631099344371_o   Saba Esam Khattak: Fashion is not always outwards. For me, it has always been how I feel about something on the inside, in sync or not with how I am. Following trends is fun, but nothing beats the feeling when you carry something that defines your personality. You walk an inch taller, you play your smile, you let the wind catch the breeze, you enjoy the sun cast shadows on your face. To some, you still might not LOOK beautiful but you wouldn’t neither mind nor care because you FEEL beautiful. And THAT makes all the difference. Fashion says: Me too, style says: ONLY me!!

15338873_10157851381355174_2091753197977272291_n   Zeynab Zafar Ahmed: Fashion is an expression of self, It’s an art. One that can be perceived in various ways and only those who truly understand the language of Fashion, can really appreciate its various forms.

14729376_1214976571859032_5433622015822108169_n  Maha Usman: For me fashion is any trend that makes me comfortable in my skin; something that gives more meaning to my personality.

11949424_10154127504652995_5399186319257303203_n   Ummara Akhter: Fashion is all about feeling amazing by different looks and acceptance in society.

13627177_1122022117841233_7672160129043733649_n   Duria Ali: Fashion is something that’s comfortable and trendy at the same time.

13996326_1677158289269053_2383882902754605448_o   Roger Frances: Fashion is your personality translated into your wardrobe

14720447_1566971713329105_8424067775222942701_n   Taghreed Wasim:  For me fashion is what i look good in, i wont follow a trend just because its THE thing, i will follow it only if I feel it looks good on me !

15241919_1171943206222218_1191616980661588889_n   Mary Imran: It’s the ongoing trend with the present time ..but for me everything I see is not fashion ..everything that suits me is fashion. .

15179099_1183546751731339_1635899874906661286_n   Iyla Hussain: Fashion is an expression of self.

15283937_1471302216231013_867235118825485821_n   Zeeshan Arif: Fashion is everything…that makes u look different…classy…provided you know well how to carry yourself and you yourself are confident that this makes you look great. I would say…everybody who is experimental these days is called fashionable…but one has to consider that decency should be there…ALWAYS!!!

12799250_10153439109878907_3609656072799572817_n    Uruba Khan: Fashion is expressing your mood and culture through clothing. It can be day to day clothing or special occasions but it tends to reflect your personality and mood.

15241201_10154536981850358_2569659834595813498_n   Maha Dania Qazi:  Fashion is a seven letter word like the days of the week. Like each day is different, fashion may be diverse in different parts of the world. Fashion can also be unifying in terms of bringing together people following a common trend. Fashion is fun, frivolous and meaningful. It’s not any one thing.

Fashion is what you are offered four times a year, Style is what you pick out of that fashion, It’s what you make of it once you’ve learned what to accept and ignore based on what looks good on you.

Fashion is part of our daily lives. Its an ever evolving way of expressing who you are and how you feel today. Even people who claim not to follow any trend, wake up each morning and pick clothes they want to wear according to where they are going, who they are going to meet, what defines or suits them. Its’s always there! The clothes, accessories, shoes, bags etc that hit the market are according to the latest trends of course and we all buy them.

Speaking of fashion, we are bringing on board someone who certainly knows her way around it. She is like a breath of fresh air straight from the stunning valley of Hunza. She has a versatile sense of fashion, is an educationist by profession,  plays football, sings, dances, is fond of dogs and polo matches, loves shopping, a big foodie,  has a contagious smile, and of course who can deny the warmth of her chirpy personality. She is a fashionista in its true sense and she will be speaking ‘fashion’!

We welcome Farwa Hussain to our Wings & Strokes family! She will be writing about what’s hot, what’s not..style, colors, trends, do’s and don’ts and alot more.

Keep visiting to know about all that the fashion world has to offer.

Recipe: Shawarma

Hey everyone! Our food expert has something special for you all today. Something that is loved very much in Middle East and parts of South Asia. Yes! She is bringing you the classic shawarma.

(Please note that all her recipes are tried and tested so you can be sure of the taste)

Let’s get started  🙂

You will need:

Chicken 1 kg boneless
Salt: 1 tsp
Red chilli powder: 1tsp
Red chilli flakes: 1/2 tsp
Black pepper: 1/4 tsp
White vinegar: 2 tsp
Oil: 1/2 tsp

Mix all ingredients well with chicken (cut into cubes) and set aside for 30 minutes for all the flavors to blend in well. Then take a wok, fry the chicken till its nice and tender.

While your chicken is soaking up the flavors, its best to get your salad ready for filling, here is what you will need:

Cucumber: 1
Orange carrot: 1
Vinegar for dipping.
Cut the cucumber n carrot into thin slices and soak in vinegar for a while.

Now for the mayo sauce:
Egg: 1 large
Garlic clove: 1 piece
Green chilli: 1
White vinegar: 1/2 tsp
Black pepper: 1/4 tsp
Chinese salt: 1/4 tsp
Salt: 1/4 tsp
Sugar: 1/4 tsp
Oil : 1 cup

Put all ingredients into a blender and blend well. When the ingredients form a thick paste, slowly add in the oil making sure that it helps the mixture get thick and fluffy. Turn off the blender, your paste is now ready for the shawarma.

Now there are two ways of serving this classic, much loved shawarma. Take pita bread and spread the paste evenly over it. Now mix the chicken with vinegar-dipped cucumber and carrots and roll it all up nicely. Make sure you have butter paper with you to wrap it up before you can enjoy it.

Another way of eating it is in the form of a shawarma platter. Take chicken, cucumber, carrots and mix them all well. Take a dish and lay out the chicken along with Pita bread cut into halves. Serve the paste with it to bring out the flavors. For those of you who enjoy the flavor of garlic can add a bit more to the paste and please your taste buds.

Hope you guys like it!

Indian Fest @ Al Qasba

Yet another day, yet another list of chores to be taken care of. But of course we must take out time to live the life that we all work so hard for. Speaking of which I made my way to the Indian Fest at Al Qasba last night. The weather is beautiful these days and so was the decor. Warm and inviting! Just the kind of thing you need after a long day.

The trees adorn the traditional yellow, orange and, red drapes. Handcrafted dolls and umbrellas hang from the trees. There are crafts to make, food to eat, performances to enjoy, beautiful bangles at the stalls and of course henna to adorn your hands.

The handicrafts stall will surely win you over and you won’t leave till you buy a piece for your house.

The music platform will keep you entertained throughout the evening. Bright and vibrant colors of Rangoli design competition is something to watch while you are there.

Rajasthan puppetry is a unique experience in itself and of course who can deny the exquisite flavors of the Indian cuisine.

Yesterday was the first day, but don’t worry you have till the 19th of November to enjoy the Indian Fest. Make your way down to Qasba everyone!
Al Qasba has opened some new cafe’s adding to the whole experience which I’m dying to try. Plus I was extremely happy to see the eye of the Emirates being installed again.

Qasba looked incomplete without it. The whole Al Qasba experience just got better with the addition of the dancing fountains right below the Eye of the Emirates which I was pleasantly surprised to see. After the Mall of Dubai this is where you will find the dancing fountains!

So I hope that I have given you enough reasons to make your way to Al Qasba tonight. Have a great time!

A Product A Day! Maybelline Age Rewind Eraser.

Hey you gorgeous ladies! Dark circles are every woman’s worst nightmare. We are always looking for ways to minimize their appearance which means we are willing to try all kinda home remedies which work on some and don’t make any difference at all on some women leaving them disappointed. There are a gazillion concealers out there in the market and having tried many i somehow stick to the one and only Maybelline Age rewind. It is a very good concealer. It lightens and brightens areas that need concealing and brightening. The best part is that it’s light on the pocket.. It doesn’t last all day and needs another application after a few hours but its still worth it. I’d suggest use it with a good primer and you are good to go!

I would give it 3.5 out of 5

Let me know what you think.
