Jehanzeb Aftab a.k.a JZ

We come across many people in our lives who are good at something or the other, the person that I’m about to introduce you all to today seems to have mastered skills in many fields. He is a brilliant photographer, an entrepreneur, a designer, a traveler, a foodie, he is into planes (ladies ahem) he can sing, dance and he is very charming 🙂 Ring any bells? This name does not need too much of a pretty introduction. He is the latest sensation in the world of men’s fashion with the launch of  J Squares and has neatly taken care of the health conscious lot at the same time with LeanBox.
This handsome young man has been a household name for long. Ladies & gentlemen, I give you Jehanzeb Aftab.

W&S: Tell us about yourself?

JZ: My name is Jehanzeb Aftab, I’m a small business entrepreneur. I shoot people as a hobby and that’s how I got into photography

W&S: It’s often been said that mathematicians do their work best when they are young, philosophers when old, and photographers..?

JZ: Photographers do their work best when they are in the best of moods.

W&S: What inspired you to be a photographer?

JZ: I grew up looking at my father and playing with his camera which always made me curious about the black box (camera) and what goes on inside it.

W&S: If you were to pick one moment that describes your entire past life, what would that be?

JZ: I don’t think there is just one moment that can describe my entire life. I believe in living in the present. All your past moments be it good or bad collectively shape up your life.

W&S: As a photographer what do you specialize in?

JZ: I specialize in portrait and events.

W&S: What type of camera do you shoot with?

JZ: I use a Nikon

W&S: What lighting equipment you like working with?

JZ: I love working with an off camera flash used with an Octagon softbox.

W&S: Can you as a photographer relate to the importance of using Photoshop?

JZ: I think softwares and technology have had a great impact on photography and skills used in producing a final image.

W&S: A website or blog you often visit?

JZ: Flickr and Pinterest

W&S: A photographer who inspires you?

JZ: Gavin Bond

W&S: Each location can have many different stories so how do you decide what you want to craft out of it?

JZ: It’s usually the clients pick as to what location they want to shoot at, as a photographer I give my best opinion.

W&S: Books that have inspired you?

JZ: Forty Rules of Love

W&S: Most memorable childhood memory?

JZ: Long road trips with old Bollywood songs from Dad’s collection.

W&S: You are known amongst your friends as?

JZ: The photographer

W&S: As a child, you grew up wanting to be?

W&S: One thing you wish you had designed?

JZ: Something I would really like to design is men’s suiting. Everyone is doing suits that are nice but there are specific cuts and the way they sit on your body..there is so much to it. I would really like to do this.

W&S: Any particular assignment you would have wanted to take up?

JZ: I came across this assignment sometime back that I would have wanted to take up, it was basically about real estate photography focused on architecture for a huge hotel chain where they wanted seven properties being shot over a period of six months. That really wasn’t feasible for me at the time as I was really busy with work and i couldn’t take 6 months off for another project. Nevertheless I wish I had that kind of time and resources back then to take that up.

W&S: What have you learned from your journey?

JZ: Work hard. Work smart and that is the only way to go in life. The harder, the smarter you work, it will get you places.

W&S: Where do you see yourself five years from now?

JZ: Not very sure what I’ll be doing but I’m guessing that I probably will be moving deeper into the fashion industry, coming up with new projects, new lines. Let’s see how that works but that’s what I aim for.

W&S: Your thoughts on Wings & Strokes?

JZ: I think it’s a great platform for like-minded people to connect and share their thoughts. Very different and interesting content that flows through the blog and is always very helpful in many ways.

W&S: Thank you so much for your time Mr.Aftab, its been a pleasure. Wish you all the best for all your future endeavours! Cheers!

Weekend Chit Chat

Hey everyone! Hope Ramadan is going well for you all. I have not really been MIA just crazy busy with my little ones and home. Gosh we don’t realize how much of an effort goes into our days and nights. It’s only when you get time to be by yourself and really breath, is when you get to ponder over the fact that it’s a lot of work. So all the people out there, men or women, who take out so much of their time to be with their families and do anything and everything to make them happy, Hats off to US! 🙂 I do however try to stay active on Instagram so that I stay connected with you all. For those of you who are not on my Instagram can follow me, my ID is  sonyalee1. Let’s connect! 🙂

For those of you who don’t know yet, the official page for Wings & Strokes is www.facebook.com/wingsandstrokes. You can find Wings and Strokes on Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and YouTube.

Moving on let’s talk about the weekend. Ramadan has us all busy here, but I do have to point out that it relieves us of the daily task of preparing lunch for the family. I still have to prepare something for the kids of course.

This weekend has been extremely lazy, I fell very sick and that drained me of the much needed energy. Still managed to take the kids out for a bit, they deserve a break as much as we adults do. Found some really neat things for the house (i’m obsessed with my home and home decor) you can easily call me The Desperate Housewife, most of my friends call me that. Watched a great movie with my kiddies, it’s not something new but definitely worth it. It’s called Game Plan. It’s super cute and my older one loved it. The Rock really does justice to his character and I adorrrrrrred him in this one. Parenting is indeed the most beautiful thing on earth. I feel fortunate to have been blessed with wonderful children who make my world beautiful and my life worth living. I hope and pray that I can help them become worthy people as they grow up.

Also I wanted to tell you that I am starting a new section in the blog talking about everything related to ‘Home‘. Really excited about that. I spend most of my time at home with my children. I have been working from home as well. As this is the place where I spend most of my time, I find myself doing something or the other throughout the day. This is something I’m very passionate about so expect a lot of home related posts. (Like seriously)

Big question for you all. I know most of you open W&S on your phones but I wonder if you have had the chance to open it on your desktops or laptops? Do try it once, and let me know what you think of the layout of the blog. I think you might just like it more, I prefer to open it on laptop (self obsession, yesss).  So the weekend ends here in UAE tomorrow and begins in most parts of the world. What are your plans? I plan to lose weight lol but then again that’s what I plan everyday 😉

Some of my friends want me to put my name on the posts which I never do as I didn’t really want this to be about me but I feel that it’s good to connect, it’s “time” to connect! I have been blogging for two years now, Wings & Strokes is two years old, I have neatly kept my name out of it for this long and spoken about people and things that inspire me. Even though I don’t post regularly these days but I promise to fix that so we get to know each other more. Thank you for visiting, reading and staying for a bit. Means the world to me!

Enjoy the weekend!

Love,

Sonya

Independence day each year!

Each year we think about celebrating our independence day with great fervor. We plan a lot of things and then there are others who plan to sleep the entire day. Some of us take this opportunity to tell the upcoming generation how we got this beautiful land while others spend the entire day watching television. We all are different in our own ways, we all take things differently and we all have our own ways of celebrating something. Speaking of celebration of course we can’t deny the fact that a lot has changed over the years, the good old days of decorating our houses in colors of green and white, finding the biggest flag in the market, watching the fire works, bringing fire crackers, getting up in the morning to watch the glorious parade, singing patriotic songs, and the list is endless. There was something about the 14th of August that made us proud and happy. Times have changed, we have buried our good old traditions somewhere and adapted to the modern belief of less is more. Hence we think of not doing anything at all except maybe watch TV and sleep the whole day. Hats off to all those who still make an effort to keep the spirit alive! Truly!

I personally believe in keeping up with all that we have experienced over the years but also make a difference by doing something for my country. Planting a tree or two, eating with the poor, cleaning the neighborhood, educating poor children on my own etc.

Minar-e-Pakistan-Lahore

Over the years, we have heard some of the greatest patriotic songs of our times. Let’s relive those and recall the good times. I thought maybe it would make us stop and think for a second how we spent our independence day this year and inspire us enough to spend it differently next year. Enjoy!

Dil Dil Pakistan

How can we forget Dil Dil Pakistan. The song we grew up with! Its original version is still as fresh as ever in our minds and nothing beats that!

Jazba Junoon

Junoon brought forward a song that took the entire generation by storm. With glimpses of the 92 world cup in its video, it became an instant hit!

Ae Jawan

Ae Jawan by the young boys of Awaz shot in the breathtaking mountains of our country was a treat to watch.

Tera bina dil na lagay

Faakhir came out with his solo and touched hearts all over.

Ae Rah e Haq Ke Shaheedo

This years Coke Studio gave us goose bumps by bringing forward this masterpiece. A tribute to all martyrs who lost their lives for the beloved country.

Pakistan Pakistan

Mersmerizing vocals of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan never fail to win our hearts.

Main to daikhoo ga

Strings came out with this song in times of crisis and could relate to the common man and his problems. Became an instant hit!

Sohni dharti

Last years Coke Studio brought together different artists to relive this beauty.

There are of course many other beautiful patriotic songs out there. Do tell us your favorites! 🙂

story_main_picture_big

The man that changed the world map. He fought to create the country we call our home, Pakistan. Muhammad Ali Jinnah known as the Quaid-e-azam took a dream, a hope, a thought and made it a reality.

2015-08_pakistan-independence_03 (1)

Let’s make our Quaid proud. He gave us this beautiful homeland  and its upto us to take care of it preserve its ideology. Let’s not forget the minorities are very much a part of each and every one of us. Live and let live!

Long live Pakistan!

We are back!

Hello everyone! Yes I realize that I have been away for quiet some time but life has its own way of keeping us occupied in ways that are beyond our control. Anyway I’m back with more to share with you all 🙂 Can’t wait to get started! Let’s begin! Cheers!

Celebrating Fathers!

They say, A father’s love is just as important to a child’s development as a mother’s, and sometimes more so. Father’s are unsung heroes! They work really hard to give us the life that we live and the person we become.  Through all the joy, the love, the care…we want to take this day and cherish our fathers by telling them that they matter more than they know, that we love them more than we show. That their presence alone makes all the difference in our lives. The comfort, love, strength we get from our heroes is much more than we ever imagined and we are immensely proud to have each one of you in our lives. To all fathers out there! 🙂

As they say :

Farwa Hussain Khan:

Today when we can see and hear that everyone is taking out time to wish all the amazing fathers in the world, I want to give a massive shoutout to my wonderful Father who has been my King since day one. Thank you Father for all the times you did not reach like a father but as my best friend. Thank you for always giving me shoulder to cry on. Thank you for letting me know my worth. And most of all thank you for raising me like a princess. Today, I want to tell you that I adore you and I love you but other than that I respect you so much because you’ve raised me in such a way which I’m sure that no other could, no other man can, no other man will. I will always be your little princess and you’ll always be my King.

Raza Ahmed Sukhera:

If I count the most impacting feelings of my life, my father holding my hand, garbing me upwards while climbing to the train when we were leaving from Lahore I was hardly 5 or 6 years old I guess. Then one day we both were sitting at tube well in-front of our home and I can still feel the sound of water pumping out along-with his voice inquiring how much semesters are left of my graduation. I felt like he was tired. There have been lot of ups and downs since he left, and now I feel that these ups and downs would have been less fatigued, less horrifying if he would have been with us. Always miss him, specially on little achievements, little appreciations I receive.

What Is A Dad?

A dad is someone who
wants to catch you before you fall
but instead picks you up,
brushes you off,
and lets you try again.

A dad is someone who
wants to keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way,
even though his heart breaks in silence
when you get hurt.

A dad is someone who
holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break the rules,
shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail…

Happy Father’s Day everyone!!

Regards,

Wings & Strokes

Gorgeous plus size models, truly inspirational!

It is extremely important to know and accept who you are. Tall/ short, dark/fair/wheatish, fat/slim..embrace yourselves and others around you. I came across something that inspired me and i thought of sharing it, knowing the struggle of a woman in the world of today. Remember, being you is what defines real beauty!

8-Gorgeous-Plus-Size-Models

Out of all the newish fashion trends the ‘plus-size’ is the most sensational one. The first-rated fashion houses all over the world refill their modeling families with gorgeous plus-size girls. More and more fashion editorials and brands expand to include larger sizes. The high-profile ad campaigns can’t stop to highlight the exquisite beauty of voluptuous bodies. Instagram ‘plus-size’ hashtags and accounts go viral. The beauty bloggers and critics discuss the pros and cons of full-figured beauty. In a word, the plus-size trend has revolutionized the modeling industry with her long-standing standards of body type.
Nevertheless the ‘plus-size’ is still a loaded term and causes a stir at every turn. So while everyone all over the web is trying to offer up an opinion on the ‘genetically gifted’ bodies, missing the thought and stories of the models themselves. These are must-know names of the plus-size modeling world. They really have a lot for you to know.

Kate-Upton

Kate Upton

“The things that they’re rejecting are things that I can’t change. I can’t change my bra size. They’re natural! I can work out and I can stay healthy and motivated, but I can’t change some things. I really just live my life. I love my body. It’s what God gave me!’
This outsized diva has skyrocketed to fame in the fashion world owing to her outstanding shape. She never dreamed she would be high fashion model and one of most talked about personalities all over the world. After her debut in Sports Illustrated she had the extended-size monopoly featuring the 10-size swimwear. She smiled from the covers of fashion magazines showing off her sun-kissed skin and beach curls. Kate is pretty sure that there is no reason to hide the curves. Being plus-sized is a reason to flaunt this fact. That’s why she is blatantly upfront about her body. She keeps the meal plan under control and works out hard at the gym. The full-figured bombshell admits it was hard for her to conceive so many negative statements and non-stop questions like ‘Is she really so fat?’ Now she’s learned to ignored the critics and just enjoy. And you know what? We’re happy she can.

Ashley-Graham

Ashley Graham

I know my curves are sexy and I want everyone else to know that theirs are too.’
Once in an air-punching moment of scandalous plus-size stream the 16-sized girl in a tiny black bikini blew up the world. Ashley Graham is one of the most famous oversized ladies. Her over-the-top career includes the spreads of the best editions like Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, Elle. She has started her modeling career at the age of 12. That’s why the 27-years old model feels absolutely free in the co-working environment of perfectly skinny models. Her considered opinion is that there society needs more body education in schools, because that’s where eating and mental disorders start. Teen girls take the beauty standards too literally and simply have no chance to love their gifted bodies. Changing the fashion industry has never been easy but Ashley broke the barriers down. Let’s give her a standing ovation!

Tara-Lynn

Tara Lynn

‘I like to believe that my pictures are used as an inspiration for girls who struggle with a poor self-image. It encourages them. I get a lot of messages from girls who tell me that looking at my pictures, or from one of my colleagues, makes them feel better and more secure in their body. They are happy to see someone they can identify with.’
The next plus-size trendsetter is body conscious Tara Lynn, who gets men’s heart racing even more than slim models counterparts. She is best known for the cover of Elle France. Then her gorgeous photoshoots spreads appeared in Vogue Italia, CR Fashion and others. She often shares her thoughts about plus-size mainstream and hardly strives for the oversized models rights on their way to being seeing as full-fledged fashion icons. By the way Miss Lynn’s French and Spanish are fluent and moreover she has a degree in linguistics. Who else but the lady like she is capable of stirring a fashion-revolution?!

Robyn-Lawley

Robyn Lawley

I’ve got big hips and a big body. I’m double, triple the size of other models – and I embrace that – I own it.
This ‘body-gifted’ model is well known for her covers of Italian Vogue, GQ and Cosmopolitan Australia. She amazed everyone with her stunning spread of Elle France and the ad works with Mango, Ralph Lauren, Marina Rinaldi, Persona Collezioni. She debuted the exclusive line for H&M. This year she appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue 2015 showing off the bikini from her own line.
You’ll be surprised but moreover she has her own food blog, takes viral photoshoots of her plus-sized colleges and writes articles for the Daily Beast. Now please take a seat because at the beginning of the March 2015 she gave a birth to her first child.
She smiles when someone asking her ‘How is it possible to manage all these things?’ Still people around continuing to guess the secret of her magnetism and unquenchable energy, I just want to call her the true women. Amen!

Denise-Bidot

Denise Bidot

‘Being you is what defines real beauty.’
The advocate of curvaceous women and the international plus-size model who exploded the fashion standards with a size 14. She was praised to be present on the catwalk by Anna Wintour (OMG!). This full-figured leading diva is a famous TV personality. She even was a part of J Lo and Tyra Banks shows. But she thinks that her main task is to learn the ‘plus-size’ industry and to spread a worldwide message that the only limit of beauty is located in our heads.

Through the lens

We begin our interviews this month and first up is someone from the infinite world of photography. He is very passionate about his work and today he tells us all about it.

Meet Mr. Rizwan Gill, a photographer whose work speaks for itself and creates images that are emotional, edgy, original and capture a unique moment in time.

10556381_939634879389434_5532544465633840323_n

Let’s begin!
W&S: It’s often been said that mathematicians do their best work when they’re young, philosophers when old, and photographers…?

Mr. Rizwan: Photography and photographers do not have age limits and they are best at every stage of age with new innovative and interesting ideas to capture in their camera what they want to.

W&S: Tell us about yourself

Mr. Rizwan: I’m a Pakistani national, born 4th October 1989. I have done my BBA Hons in Marketing and currently working in the corporate sector. I started off with photography but then entered the world of videography and currently my focus is weddings and I must say I’m immensely enjoying myself.

W&S: Where is home?

Mr. Rizwan: For me Home is Family. Doesn’t matter where we are as long as I’m with my family. Home is located in the twin cities of Pakistan.

1

W&S: What inspired you to be a photographer?

Mr. Rizwan: It’s a quite interesting and funny story actually. At first I was interested in modeling and because of my interest my photographer friend often clicked various shots of me. The final result seldom came out according to my expectations and I often picked out errors and faults in them from them being out of focus to wrong angles and well the list is endless. That’s what compelled me to learn more about cameras and use of different lenses etc. My research and interest led me to this wonderful field and then there was no stopping me. I wanted the pictures to be saved for my entire life and that’s why I started capturing moments for myself as well as for others. I challenged myself and went onto the journey of becoming better with every click.

W&S: If you were to pick one moment that describes your entire past life, what would that be?

Mr. Rizwan: One moment would be difficult to choose, I guess.

W&S: What do you specialize in?

Mr. Rizwan: I believe that there should not be a photographer who specializes only in one area only

W&S: What type of camera do you shoot with?

Mr. Rizwan: Canon 7 D and Canon 60 D

W&S: What lighting equipment you like working with?

Mr. Rizwan: It really depends on the location and the subject in case of lighting equipment. Sometimes it’s the daylight, sometimes the ambiance light and of course our own speed lights and LED’s.

W&S: Can you as a photographer relate to the importance of using Photoshop?

Mr. Rizwan: I do not relate photography with Photoshop because it takes the true essence and feel of a photo. What I believe is that a person should take a perfect picture using the camera and it should not require photoshop.

3

W&S: A website or blog you often visit?

Mr. Rizwan: Facebook and the good old google. I’m a simple guy (laughs)

W&S: A photographer who inspires you?

Mr. Rizwan: Joe McNally

W&S: How long have you been a photographer and did you go to school to study photography?

Mr. Rizwan: It’s been almost 7- 8 years that I have been photographing and I did not go to any school to study photography.

4

W&S: How do you deal with difficulties of the ever changing weather?

Mr. Rizwan: For me, if you really want to capture a memory or you really want to capture whatever the situation is, there is nothing that can stop you.

W&S: Each location can have many different stories so how do you decide what you want to craft out of it?

Mr. Rizwan: Whatever the location is there are always moments that can be captured and there is always a storyboard that can be made from beginning till the very end.

W&S: For people who want to get into photography, what kind of images do you want to see in their portfolio? How do you build to attract clients in this industry?

Mr. Rizwan: I would like to see photos that are able to portray a complete story and reveal its true essence and that’s what a client is attracted to.

6

W&S: How important is it today to diversify, to work with multiple clients, or do you work solely for yourself?

Mr. Rizwan: Diversification in today’s world is very important. You can get complete different stories from different clients.

W&S: Books that have inspired you?

Mr. Rizwan: I don’t really read much.

W&S: Your favorite song of all time?

Mr. Rizwan: Right here waiting for you by Richard Marx

5

W&S: Your favorite movie of all time?

Mr. Rizwan: Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron

W&S: Artists/photographers that inspire you?

Mr. Rizwan: Ray Rommans and Joe McNally

W&S: Your take on selfies?

Mr. Rizwan: I’m not a selfie fan and I really do not like to take selfies

7

W&S: What do you think is vastly overrated?

Mr. Rizwan: I think that would be Photoshop

W&S: You have many images that talk to this, you picture environments that feel very personal either to you or the subjects in the photos. The spaces seem emotionally invested, feel like part of a scenario. Is this something you work for?

Mr. Rizwan: Yes, that’s the main purpose of photography.

W&S: What is that one thing you wish you had designed?

Mr. Rizwan: That’s difficult to say, so many wonderful things out there. How about a camera, I have to admit that I would have loved to design a camera of some sort.

W&S: Any particular assignment you would have wanted to take up?

Mr. Rizwan: I just wanted to be a part of any feature film as a cameraman, DOP or in direction, as I love doing this.

W&S: What have you learned from your journey?

Mr. Rizwan: People out there and our society is very unpredictable. I had good and bad critics at the same time but obviously hard work, passion and honesty makes you and your work just amazing.

W&S: Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Mr. Rizwan: I would like to see myself as a free teacher of photography where people who really are interested in learning can eventually learn and implement.

W&S: Lastly, if you could wish upon a star, what would you ask for?

Mr. Rizwan: World peace lol. No seriously I want everyone to live peacefully, there is so much pain, so much misery around the world that it breaks my heart. I wish people would accept each other and live in harmony.

W&S: Final words of inspiration for upcoming talent?

Mr. Rizwan: Work hard, have patience and just be yourself. No matter what, Just believe in yourself and your work.
